Objective 2 Grant - European FundingThe East of England Objective 2 programme areas were designated in March 2000 for support from the European Structural Funds. This was to assist economic regeneration of these areas and so support their convergence with the economic performance of the region as a whole. The North Norfolk Coast Objective 2 area covers ten local authority wards, spread across two local government districts, between Holme-next-the-Sea and Cromer. They are North Coast and Burnham wards in the Kings Lynn and West Norfolk Borough Council district and Wells, Blakeney, Cley, Bodham, Sheringham, The Runtons, Cromer and Suffield Park wards in the North Norfolk District Council area. The total area has a population of some 28,200 people (mid 1996 estimate), of which some 17,625 people (62.5%) live in the traditional resort towns of Cromer and Sheringham, joined by The Runtons ward, in the east of the designated area. To the west of Sheringham, the area is predominantly rural with the dispersed population living in small village settlements. Much of the area has designation as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and large parts of the coastal marshes have special wildlife and nature conservation status. This remote rural area, which is poorly served by transport and telecommunications infrastructure, has a narrow economic structure, which is overdependent upon seasonal tourism, agriculture, fishing and local service provision. Levels of unemployment within the area vary greatly between the summer and winter months and average rates of pay are some 12% below the regional average. For full information about Objective 2, you can download the following documents, which are in Adobe Acrobat Reader (PDF) format:
| Priorities and Measures - SPD part IV (pdf - 81.3Kb) | This part of the SPD gives an indication of the kinds of projects which will help regenerate the area, and will be a useful introduction for those who are looking to secure Objective 2 funding.
| North Norfolk Framework (pdf - 160Kb) | The action plan for the North Norfolk Objective 2 area. All projects must fit its criteria and be adopted into this Local Framework to be eligible for funding.
| Selection Criteria inc Gateway Proforma (pdf - 134Kb) | An explanation of what projects must achieve, and/or aim to achieve, if they are to be eligible for Objective 2 funding. This is an important project development tool.
